Like several successful television series, it was inevitable that 21 Jump Street will be adapted for the big screen. The late eighties hit drama, about undercover cops in Secondary school, struck a chord with audiences making it a young adult icon outside of relatively unknown actor generally known as Johnny Depp. But Hollywood has a practice of often flipping the script, taking a successful idea and heading inside opposite direction on its way for the cinema. Watch 21 Jump Street Online as a comedy? Uh, no. Even I'd been greater than somewhat skeptical and balked at the idea associated with an adaptation being converted into a car for comedic actor Jonah Hill. Add Channing Tatum for the mix, an actress who still hasn?t found his proper footing in films despite starring inside a hit movie or two and ?21 Jump Street: The Comedy? seems like a disastrous idea. Approximately I believed.

This comedic adaptation isn?t perfect, but it?s also not even close to being disastrous.  In reality, the film directed by Cloudy Using a Potential for Meatballs helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller often feels like it?s self conscious of it's in reality a motion picture, fearlessly running while using indisputable fact that Hill and Tatum really are a two of inept rookie cops who clearly don't know what they're doing.  Even better is Michael Bacall?s (Project X) screenplay takes great pleasure in highlighting those ridiculous cliches familiar to cop shows, unlike Todd Phillips? unsuccessful Starsky & Hutch adaptation. The television series made a success outside of a somewhat implausible idea, Bacall?s screenplay seems fully aware of this in it?s humor. More than one character  recognizes Tatum obviously looks too old for High School, while Ice Cube as being the stereotypical police captain even acknowledges that he?s a stereotypical police captain.  Rather than continually milk a gag, the film has a plethora of them up its sleeves.  Some fail, but many hit on target in lieu of miss.

One unexpected comedic idea that works rather brilliantly in 21 Jump Street would be the relationship between Hill and Tatum who initially begin as Secondary school rivals before creating a full on ?bromance.?  With Tatum initially the most popular the jock and Hill the pathetic brain, while undercover in search of the dealers for any new design drug, their roles are literally switched following a transcript mix up forces the crooks to adopt the other?s fake identity.  Hill not just manages to meet the approval from the cool clique in school led by Dave Franco (younger brother of James), but snags an unlikely love involvement in the type of Brie Larson.  Academic failure Tatum finds new friends in a very band of science nerds led by Project X  actor Dax Flame, but feels shockingly neglected and also hurt that Hill has grown the alpha male in a clique he dominated years earlier.  Hill is definitely an actor who?s no stranger to comedic interaction, making even awkward behavior look hip, though the real surprise is definitely how well Tatum embraces his role, managing to steal the complete picture. We percieve him range from being the ?Jeff Spicoli? type, worshiped by his peers, into a pathetic and somewhat sensitive outcast, who feels forgotten when his best friend becomes the favorite kid in class. It?s among the many fresh ideas that makes 21 Jump Street work.

21 Jump Street can be a satire that seems less interested in plot plus more interested in social interaction.  The reason Hill and Tatum are sent undercover often gets pushed on the back burner while their Captain Ice Cube repeatedly reminds them ?locate the dealers, find the supplier.? Associated with pension transfer comedies, there comes a time the place that the humor does get sluggish along with the film slowly has no steam. Nonetheless it comes late in the game high really are a unique amount of surprises that bear this picture running just like a locomotive.  It?s not much of a well oiled locomotive, but it really reaches its destination and contains more entertainment value than one might realize.  Good fun.
